Propers for Sun., Dec. 12, 2021 - Sarum

For use with the "Divine Liturgy of St. Gregory, that is, the Roman Rite, according to the ancient use of Sarum" free download document. All usages below have been approved for the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (ROCOR), for those communities using the Sarum Liturgy (this status is coordinated and overseen by Archpriest Mark Rowe, Vicar General for the Western Rite Communities of the ROCOR). Note that there is a typo in the 2021 bi-ritual Ordo and Calendar for ROCOR, listing several days prior to St. Andrew's day as being "in the octave of St. Andrew."

FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT

MASS

Officium: How trustworthy is Thy protection! Let it be with Thy servants and aid them.
Unto Thee, O Lord, have I lifted up my soul. My God, I put my trust in Thee, O let me never be confounded, neither let mine enemies laugh me to scorn. For all they that wait on Thee shall not be ashamed.

V. Tell me Thy ways, O Lord : and teach me Thy paths.

Of old David, filled with the breath of the benevolent Spirit, uttered clear resouding hymns to Christ, in these very words:
Unto Thee, O Lord, have I lifted up my soul. My God, I put my trust in Thee, O let me never be confounded,
but let me shine brightly in Thy power, in the glory of Thy victory.
Neither let mine enemies laugh me to scorn,
those who despise themselves by submitting their necks to prideful ways.
For all they that wait on Thee shall not be ashamed.

V. Lead me forth in Thy truth, and teach me : for Thou art God my Saviour.

Unto Thee, O Lord, have I lifted up my soul. My God, I put my trust in Thee, O let me never be confounded, neither let mine enemies laugh me to scorn. For all they that wait on Thee shall not be ashamed.

V. Remember Thy loving-kindnesses, O Lord : and Thy mercies, which are from everlasting.

Unto Thee, O Lord, etc.

V.  O remember not the sins of my youth : and of mine ignorance.

Unto Thee, O Lord, etc.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, unto the ages of ages, amen.

Unto Thee, O Lord, etc.

Kyrie-Litany. The Gloria is not sung until the feast of the Nativity.

V. The Lord be with you. R. And with thy spirit. Let us pray.

COLLECT OF THE DAY:  Stir up Thy power, we beseech Thee, O Lord, and come: that we may be found worthy to be rescued from the besetting dangers of our sins and saved by Thy deliverance. Who livest and reignest with God, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God through all the ages of ages. Amen.

There are no additional collects unless the priest wish it.

Lesson: Romans 13:11-14 (p. 2 in the complete epistle-gospel Lectionary).

A reading from the epistle of blessed Paul the apostle to the Romans. Brethren, know that it is now the hour for us to rise from sleep. For now our salvation is nearer than when we believed. The night is passed and the day is at hand. Let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and put on the armor of light. Let us walk honestly as in the day, not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and impurities, not in contention and envy, but put ye on : the Lord Jesus Christ.

Graduale, tone 2:  For all they that wait on Thee shall not be ashamed, O Lord.
     V. Tell me Thy ways, O Lord : and teach me Thy paths.
For all they...

Alleluia, tone 8:   Alleluia, alleluia. V. Show us, O Lord, Thy mercy, and grant us Thy salvation.  Repeat: Alleluia.

Sequence
Salvation eternal,
Life of the world unfailing,
Light everlasting,
And, truly, our redemption!

Grieving that ages of mankind were perishing
Through the tempter’s whisperings,
Thou, not leaving the heavenly heights,
Camest in Thy mercy into this lowest world.

Swiftly taking human nature,
Thou didst save all earthly beings,
Which had fallen and been lost,
Using Thy swift-acting grace.

Bringing joy to the world, O Christ,
Purify our souls and bodies,
That Thou remain in us as dwellings
Shining clear and bright.

By Thy first coming, make us righteous;
By Thy second, set us free;
That when Thy mighty light hath dawned,
And Thou shalt judge all things,

Then we, clad in robes of incorruption,
May follow, swift, without delay,
The footsteps of Thy feet,
Whithersoever they appear.

Gospel

Deacon: The Lord be with you.  R.  And with thy spirit.  Deacon: The continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. R.  Glory to Thee, O Lord.

At that time, when Jesus drew nigh to Jerusalem, and was come to Bethphage, unto Mount Olivet, He sent two disciples, saying to them: Go ye into the village that is over against you, and immediately ye shall find an ass tied, and a colt with her. Loose them and bring them to Me. And if any man shall say anything to you, say ye that the Lord hath need of them, and forthwith he will let them go. Now all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: ‘Tell ye the daughter of Sion: Behold, thy King cometh to thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of her that is used to the yoke.’ And the disciples, going, did as Jesus commanded them. And they brought the ass and the colt, and laid their garments upon them, and made Him sit thereon. And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way, and others cut boughs from the trees and strewed them in the way. And the multitudes that went before and that followed cried, saying, ‘Hosanna to the Son of David. Blessed is He that cometh in the name of the Lord.’

Offerenda, tone 2:  O hope of mercy, intercession, might, and my defense, O my Jesus!

Unto Thee, O Lord, have I lifted up my soul. My God, I put my trust in Thee, O let me never be confounded, neither let mine enemies laugh me to scorn. For all they that wait on Thee shall not be ashamed.

Thou Who art the way, the guide, the guidance, Thou knowledge of the highest truth!

     V. Lead me forth in Thy truth, and teach me : for Thou art God my Saviour, and upon Thee have I waited all the day long.

Unto Thee, O Lord, etc.

Thou Who hast compassion on those who are grieving, O our meek Loving-kindness! Forthwith, now,

     V. Look upon me and have mercy on me, O Lord. O keep my soul, and deliver me. Let me not be confounded, for I have put my trust in Thee.

Unto Thee, O Lord, etc.

Secret of the day: May these sacred gifts, O Lord, cause us who are cleansed by their mighty power to approach in greater purity Him Who created them. Through our Lord Jesus Christ Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God through all the ages of ages. R. Amen.

Preface:  ... everlasting God. Whose property and unique quality it is, that Thou art good, and never altered by any change therefrom. Be gracious to our supplications and show Thy Church Thy mercy for which she prayeth, revealing to Thy people both the mystery of the incarnation of Thine only-begotten Son, and the marvelous sacrament of His coming, that it may be known among all nations that the ancient promise made by the prophets’ prophecies hath now been fulfilled, and that those rendered beautiful by confession of the truth, may share in the dignity of adopted sonship. By Him angels praise Thy majesty...

Communio, tone 1:  Let all those born of earth be joyful for the mighty Gift!

The Lord shall show loving-kindness, and our land shall give her increase.

     V. Thou hast forgiven the offenses of Thy people; * Thou hast covered all their sins.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit : as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, unto the ages of ages, amen.

The Lord shall show loving-kindness, and our land shall give her increase.

Postcommunion of the day: .Pour Thy grace into our souls, we pray Thee, O Lord, that we who have known the incarnation of Christ Thy Son by the tidings of an angel may, through His passion and cross, be brought to the glory of the resurrection. Through...

Bowed Heads: Let us pray. Bow your heads before God. R. Thanks be to God.
May Thy grace, O Lord, ever precede us and follow us, that through the advent of Thine only-begotten Son we may await with the highest hopes of our heart a haven in this present life, and may also reach the harbor of the life to come. Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God through all the ages of ages. Amen.
